However, there are many more aspects to the platforms provided by vendors in the magic quadrant. To help you achieve this, see how Gartner defines such a solution.
According to Gartner, analytics and business intelligence (ABI) platforms enable less technical members of a CX team to “analyze, explore, share and manage data.” The platform also allows users to discover and visualize ideas, while providing the basis for cross-functional collaboration.
Artificial intelligence enables much of this functionality in modern systems, making information relevant to the user and their workflows, as well as easily accessible.
However, there are many more critical features to consider before investing in an ABI platform. Gartner points to the following 12 as prime examples:
How To Choose The Best Bi Tool: Types, Comparison, Benefits
These capabilities are fundamental sources of differentiation among the offerings of the 20 providers below. Evaluating each of them carefully, Gartner has divided each vendor into four categories: leaders, challengers, visionaries, and niche players.
Demonstrating advanced knowledge of critical ABI capabilities alongside a commitment to customer success, leaders in the magic quadrant combine a strong vision with a track record of delivering value. Not only do they offer proof of that value, but they enable incremental purchases and business scalability to meet the specific needs of companies across multiple sectors. This year’s captains are:
Achieving massive market reach and momentum, Gartner praises the Microsoft Power BI offering for its alignment with Office 365, Teams and Azure Synapse. Such a broad portfolio – which includes visual data discovery, augmented analytics and interactive dashboards – demonstrates a comprehensive vision and ambition. At the same time, the market analyst also highlights the price and value of Microsoft’s solution as an important differentiator.
After acquiring Tableau in 2019, Salesforce solidified its position as a leader in the ABI space. The acquisition enables Salesforce to create an ecosystem that leverages all the strengths of MuleSoft, Tableau and Tableau CRM. In the report, Gartner praises Salesforce for this, along with its ease of use and economy of analysis, allowing users to more easily access, prepare, analyze and present findings on their data.
Gartner Magic Quadrant Analytics And Bi Platforms 2021 Insights
2021 was a big year for Qlik, acquiring NodeGraph and Big Squid to add further capabilities to its extensive portfolio. Gartner praises these additions, highlighting Qlik Sense’s new machine learning and metadata management features as differentiating strengths. Others highlighted by the market analyst include the vendor’s deployment flexibility, as well as its customer engagement and data literacy programs.
Well positioned for success in the ABI market, challengers in the magic quadrant offer a proven ability to consistently deliver value for businesses with specific use cases. However, these providers seem to lack coordination between the various products in their portfolios. Alternatively, they may lag behind the leaders in terms of sales and marketing, industry content and innovation. This year’s contenders are:
Google has made an impressive entry into the ABI space since acquiring Looker in 2019. By integrating the ABI platform into its Google Cloud Platform (GCP) ecosystem, Gartner applauds Google for opportunities to combine its strength with other capabilities in her cloud stack. Its in-database architecture and governance – alongside application development resources – are also notable strengths. However, the market analyst warns that SQL skills are required for advanced users.
According to Gartner, Domo has achieved significant momentum within the crowded space. He notes the provider’s rapid pace of development and strong focus on consumer design as substantial reasons for this, as the company looks to capitalize on the low-code/no-code revolution affecting business technology choices. However, Gartner hints that the company is trailing market leaders due to a lack of broader application ecosystem channels.
Power Bi: Market Leader In Gartner’s Magic Quadrant For Analytics & Business Intelligence
Offering a differentiated, powerful vision for the modern ABI platform, visionaries in the magic quadrant deliver high functionality in their specialized fields. Unfortunately, despite this thought leadership, they sometimes lack the broad capabilities to execute an ABI solution at scale and consistently. This year’s visionaries are:
Introducing a new “developer playground” in 2021, Thoughtspot gives companies the tools to build innovative data applications. This is just one example of how the company is implementing its consumer-centric vision, which receives significant praise from Gartner in the report. Other noted advantages are scalability and market recognition as an augmented analytics platform. With that said, the research firm cautions that Thoughtspot lacks the broader ecosystem of data and analytics.
Having recently rebranded its ABI offering as Sisense Fusion, Sisense has evolved its vision – recognized by Gartner. Such a vision depends on the vendor’s microservices-based architecture, which is fully scalable. Developing a unique “multi-person platform” is also a major strength. However, the market analyst encourages Sisense to develop more areas – alongside manufacturing – where it differentiates itself from leaders such as Microsoft and Tableau.
By adding Cloud Coach and Code Innovate to Oracle Analytics Cloud (OAC), Oracle has worked hard to maximize the effectiveness of its platform to pave the way for co-innovation with customers. Such tools enable a consumer-centric product vision – for which Oracle receives special recognition in the report. Enhanced analytics capabilities across the cloud offering also differentiate the solution. However, Gartner highlights its momentum in a crowded market as a concern.
The Gartner Magic Quadrant Analysis Of Bi Tools (from /u/tony14828’s Comment)
In 2021, SAP prioritized increasing the ease with which users can use the ABI SAP Analytics Cloud solution. In doing so, it improved the experience of users moving to the Data Warehouse Cloud. Its success is perhaps evident in the fact that Gartner praises the company for its “unparalleled” connectivity, alongside its enhanced capabilities and closed-loop analytics. However, the research firm warns that adoption of SAP Analytics Cloud is low among businesses that do not leverage SAP solutions elsewhere in the company.
Based on machine learning and data democratization features, advanced data preparation and predictive modeling have become a major strength of TIBCO software. Gartner notes this while praising the vendor for its cloud agility, enterprise readiness and roadmap for data and analytics convergence. Unfortunately, TIBCO software may be trailing the market leaders in its product gaps, such as the lack of ability to create automated data stories from automated insights.
Launching SAS Viya 4 in 2021, SAS receives special recognition from Gartner for “market-leading” data visualization. The market analyst also notes that the provider offers a “compelling product vision” for data preparation and visual analysis, as well as the creation, operation and management of AI-based data science models. However, Gartner questions the limited adoption of the SAS solution and its bundled pricing model.
Yet another familiar name making waves in the ABI space is IBM, which is winning praise for its breadth of use cases, flexible deployment options, and roadmap for applying analytics elsewhere in the business. The latter is particularly interesting as the provider consolidates resource planning, reporting and analysis into a central portal. However, according to Gartner, where IBM falls short is its lack of sales and pricing adoption drivers against its cloud competitors.

By offering a cloud-agnostic architecture, Yellowfin is winning a lot of business through partnerships with independent software providers looking to integrate analytics into their enterprise applications. This openness – and integrations with every market leader – is a major strength of the platform, in addition to its customer-centric vision and composability. Its limited geographic reach and market dynamics, however, appear to be holding the vendor back from a leadership position.
Empower users with “What?”, “Why?” and how;” style interface, Teluis differentiates ABI’s offering. Its support for multiple personalities, the time it deserves for augmented analytics, and the scalability of cloud ecosystems are recognized in the report. However, the market analyst identifies potential areas for improvement – highlighting gaps in the use of data storytelling and reporting, as well as the lack of availability of third-party resources.
Often achieving positive results in specific areas or use cases, these vendors can provide the ideal solution for businesses leveraging a specific cloud stack. However, Gartner questions its ability to compete with market leaders – in terms of both innovation and performance. This year’s featured players are:
Lately, Amazon Web Services (AWS) has taken a big step forward in the augmented analytics space by adding Q – a natural language search capability – to its Amazon QuickSight solution. The solution is tightly integrated with AWS and is highly scalable. However – despite high brand familiarity – customer adoption remains slow. Gartner highlights this while hinting that the company should perhaps prioritize the business application development ecosystem.

As a major player in the Asia/Pacific region, the Alibaba Cloud Quick BI platform is futuristic in its approach to collective analytics and the digital orientation of the workplace. Its data literacy program and analytics synthesis capability – which helps automate business workflows – also earn praise from Gartner. However, the market analyst points out
